Connecting to Infrastructure and Other Investment Opportunities in Africa with the African Development Bank

Marc-André Blanchard, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Canada to the United Nations challenged Canadian companies to pursue the plethora of African Development Bank supported infrastructure investment opportunities in Africa during an informative session on June 14 in Toronto.  David Stevenson, African Development Bank Executive Director for Canada, echoed the message saying that Canadian companies stand to miss out on the opportunities to more aggressive companies from other countries.  Stella Kilonzo of the African Development Bank outlined the pipeline project that AfDB has developed and will be promoting at its Africa Investment Forum conference in Johannesburg in November.  Discussions around financing African projects were covered by Chris Clubb of Convergence Finance and an expert panel moderated by David Creighton including Nate Lowbeer-Lewis (CPCS Ventures), Joel Dido, (EDC), Michael Walsh (Midgard Consulting), and STeve Hobbs (Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships).  The morning concluded with presentations by Geoff Murphy and Sue Rauth on working with Global Affairs Canada in Africa and a networking luncheon.  A big thanks to seminar partners Global Affairs Canada and African Development Bank and our host for the day, Goodmans LLP.  Click on the links below to download the program presentations.

Free Trade in Africa: Opportunities for Canada with partners Gowling WLG (Canada) LLP and Global Affairs Canada

In celebration of Africa Day in Ottawa The Chamber held a presentation/panel discussion on The African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement, followed by a networking cocktail reception.

 

We were delighted to have Timothy Sargent, Deputy Minister for International Affairs, Global Affairs Canada, ,H.E. Constant Horace, Ambassador, Embassy of Madagascar to Canada and Dean of African Diplomatic Corps, and Mona Fortier M.P. and Vice Chair, Canada-Africa Parliamentary Association make welcoming remarks during the cocktail reception.

 

Keynote speakers for the afternoon session included  David Luke, Coordinator, African Trade Policy Centre, Regional Integration and Trade Division, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and Jesse Moore, Chief Executive Officer, M-KOPA Solar.  Panelists included Stephen Ludlow, Senior Director, Enterprise Product Marketing, OpenText, Yiagadeesen (Teddy) Samy, Director of Carleton’s Norman Paterson School of International Affairs, Paula Caldwell St-Onge, Director General, Pan Africa, Global Affairs Canada. The panel was moderated by Chamber Chair Avril Cole, Partner and Co-Lead, Africa Group, Gowling WLG (Canada) LLP.

The biggest African mining event in North America - with Premier Sponsor SGS and Corporate Sponsor Webber Wentzel lived up to its billing at The Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel during PDAC 2018. 

 

The sold-out breakfast - the biggest African mining event in North America - featured opening remarks by Paula Caldwell St-Onge, Director General, Pan Africa Bureau, Global Affairs Canada, Derick Govender, Executive Vice President, SGS Minerals Services and Ambassador Rosette Katungye, Advisor to the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (click to download her remarks).

The opening presentation was delivered by The Hon. Abubakar Bawa Bwari, Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, Republic of Nigeria (click to download the opening presentation) and the keynote address "African Mining...Time for a Reality Check?" was delivered by Rod Quick, Group General Manager, Evaluation, Randgold Resources (click to download the keynote presentation).

2nd Ethiopia-Canada Trade & Investment Forum Networking Reception - Toronto

June 27, 2017

Guests were able to meet 40 leading companies from Ethiopia seeking Canadian importers and distributors for their products, joint venture partners and investors and suppliers for various projects in Ethiopia.  Major sectors covered included coffee and oilseeds (sesame, sunflower, etc.), construction and building materials, heavy machinery and hotel infrastructure, travel and tourism. The Chamber was delighted to host this trade and investment delegation at a networking cocktail reception on Tuesday June 27 at Goodmans LLP.  Chamber grand sponsor MineAfrica organized a full-day seminar and B2B networking session with the delegation on Wednesday June 28 at The Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel at which the Chamber was a partner. 

 

Africa Day Celebration - Ottawa

May 23, 2017

The Chamber held its first event in Ottawa under our new pan-African mandate at a networking cocktail reception in celebration of Africa Day. 

The event was held at the offices of Chamber Grand Sponsor Member Gowling WLG and was an excellent opportunity to meet African and Canadian government officials, Canadian business leaders and Chamber members while enjoying fine wine and gourmet canapes.

 

CHINA'S INVESTMENT DRIVE IN AFRICA.  What it means for Canadian business - Toronto

April 24, 2017

Gregory Chin* and Richard Poplak* presented their views on China’s investment activities in Africa, with a particular focus on infrastructure and trends in Chinese investment in Africa, how that has benefited the continent, what the lessons are for companies from Canada and how they can best benefit from investment in Africa in the wake of Chinese investment in the continent.

The goal of the event was to show to Canadian companies that Africa is a continent on the rise and that Chinese trade and investment has led to new opportunities for added Canadian involvement in the continent.

 

  This event was organised in partnership with

*Richard Poplak is an award-winning author, journalist, and graphic novelist, and a senior correspondent at South Africa’s Daily MaverickNews site.

 

 

MOZAMBIQUE P3 STUDY TOUR - Montreal and Toronto

March 27-31, 2017

The Chamber was pleased to organize a week long study tour for a Mozambique government delegation in Montreal and Toronto on March 27-31, 2017 to learn about Canadian expertise in delivering successful private and public sector infrastructure partnerships.  The program included several networking receptions and presentations, meetings with local governments and companies, and infrastructure site visits.  The delegation was led by His Excellency Carlos dos Santos, High Commissioner of Mozambique to Canada (based in Washington) and Antoine Chevrier, High Commissioner of Canada to Mozambique.

AGM AND GUEST PRESENTATION

January 17, 2017

Toronto, ON

 

The Chamber held the 2016 AGM on January 17, 2017 in the offices of Goodmans.  The event was rounded off with a fascinating presentation by Ron Rutland, who illustrated his journey through Africa by bicycle.  The evening ended with a networking reception.

 

Stephen Pincus was thanked as outgoing Chair and for his years of support in Chamber activities.  He was presented with a David Anderson caricature - as is Chamber custom. 

 

The gathering welcomed Avril Cole as incoming Chair.

 

A second draw was held for prizes not claimed at the Indaba 2016 event.  These included two return tickets to South Africa courtesy of South African Airways, wine from Bokke Wines, pottery from the Baobab Guild, and African artwork from AbantuArt.

The Future of Journalism is in Africa!

June 29, 2016

The afternoon started off with a workshop with former Journalists for Human Rights trainer and top communications expert Heather MacDonald of Kaiser Lachance Communications on best practices in media relations. Heather MacDonald drew on her 10 years of experience in journalism, nonprofit work and communications to offer insight into the current media landscape, providing tips on working with media and outlined how to effectively convey the message.


The Chamber partnered in this event with the University of the Witwatersrand, Kaiser Lachance Communications, Brookfield Institute for Innovation + Entrepreneurship at Ryerson University and Canada's leading media development organization, Journalists for Human Rights.  The event also saw the official Canadian launch of the Future of Entrepreneurial Journalism Lab, a partnership between JHR, Brookfield and the University of the Witwatersrand's new Digital Innovation Zone in Johannesburg, South Africa. 

 

2016 Africa Day Celebrations

Ethiopian Trade Delegation

The Chamber was proud to host a delegation of 45 leading companies from Ethiopia seeking Canadian importers and distributors, suppliers and joint venture partners for investment projects in Ethiopia. The delegation was led by the Deputy Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, His Excellency Mr. Demeke Mekonnen, and Ambassador Birtukan Ayano Dadi  -  an indication of the seriousness of the delegation.  The event was well attended by members and interested parties.

 

 

Executive Networking Breakfast: Using P3s to build Mozambique

The High Commission of Canada in Mozambique and the Ontario Regional Office of Global Affairs Canada, in cooperation with the Canada-Southern Africa Chamber of Business and Goodmans LLP held a networking breakfast with a visiting delegation from the Government of Mozambique.  Representation from Mozambique included the Ministry of Transports & Communication, Development of the Transports Private Sector;  State Agency for Rural Electrification; Ministry of Finance, Treasury Department and PPP Unit; Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy; and the Investment Promotion Centre.  The delegation's aim was to learn from Canadian experts with experience and expertise in promoting and delivering PPP and innovative infrastructure projects.

 

 

17th Annual African Mining Breakfast and 14th Investing in African Mining seminar

The Chamber's African Mining Breakfast and MineAfrica's Investing in African Mining seminar took place on Tuesday March 8 at the Sheraton Hotel.  The must-attend African event during PDAC featured Ministerial delegations from Burkina Faso, Canada, Chad, Ethiopia, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Sudan, South Africa, the African Union Commission and the African Minerals Development Centre so it was only appropriate that Chamber Chairman Stephen Pincus used the opportunity to announce the Chamber's expanded focus to cover all of Africa.

 

A big thank you to Premier Sponsor SGS (who we are delighted to announce has renewed its sponsorship for 2017) and Corporate Sponsors Hatch (who also launched their new branding), Toronto Stock Exchange, Webber Wentzel, and Sponsors DRA and Falcon Drilling and the Mineral Resource Analyst Group.

 

The morning featured addresses by Godfrey Oliphant, Deputy Minister of Mineral Resources, Republic of South Africa and Frank Mugyenyi, Senior Industry Advisor, African Union Commission (AUC), Department of Trade & Industry on Leveraging the African Mining Vision, followed by a a keynote address by Sipho Pityana, Chairman of AngloGold Ashanti on Defining Partnerships the Endure Commodity Bear Markets.


Following breakfast, during the MineAfrica seminar eighteen mining companies, African Mining Ministers and expert advisors to the mining industry delivered concise presentations covering African mining projects, investment opportunities and doing business in Africa's mining industry, in four concurrent seminar rooms.

2015 AGM and Networking Reception

A very successful networking reception was held after the Chamber AGM.  Simon A. Fish, General Counsel of BMO Financial Group, gave an interesting presentation on his experiences and involvement in both the South African and Canadian Truth and Reconciliation Commissions, highlighting the positives on diversity and inclusivity in business  dealings with First Nations peoples.

"In Conversation with Albie Sachs"

Chamber Chair, Stephen Pincus, led the conversation with retired South African Constitutional Court Judge, Albie Sachs, during his recent visit to Toronto.  The audience were spellbound by Albie's positive outlook on the past, the present and the future.  It was an invigorating and enlightening morning seminar and a highlight of the Chamber's event calender for 2015.

 

The event, organised in partnership with the University of Cape Town's Canada Alumni office, and with generous sponsorship from Goodmans LLP, was open to chamber members, friends, UCT alumni and friends, and the Toronto law fraternity.  It was very well attended.

Trueman Goba, Chairman of Hatch Goba (Pty ) Limited,  presented the keynote address at the 14th Annual Indaba held at the Arcadian Loft in downtown Toronto in September.  The evening was once again a success, with great South African food and wine being served and lively networking amongst attendees.  The University of Cape Town also accepted a cheque, with thanks to the Chamber and Hatch, in support of the Graduate School of Business participating in the John Molson International MBA Case Competition in Montreal in January.  Sinazo Sibisi accepted the cheque on behalf of UCT.
 
The surprise of the evening was when Wayne Floreani was presented the Person of the Year Award, through unanimous agreement by the Chamber Board.  A well-deserved award.
 
The photographs of the event attest to the busy networking and fun being had by all.
 
Both Trueman Goba and Wayne Floreani now sit in the Rogues Gallery with their caricatures by David Anderson Illustration.
 
Our thanks once again to our team of volunteers from AISEC Ryerson who were an invaluable asset to the evening.

Crowdfunding - New Pathways to Capital

A very interesting "Crowdfunding - New Pathways to Capital" seminar was held on the morning of June 23rd, 2015. Presented by Ian Palm and Steven Cutler of Gowling Lafleur LLP, the latest developments and regulations around crowdfunding pertaining to equity were discussed.  Many relevant questions were raised, and since this is a concept in development the Chamber President called for an update seminar later in the year.

16th Annual Mining Breakfast

On March 3rd, 2015, the 16th Annual African Mining Breakfast was held in conjunction with MineAfrica's 13th Annual Investing in African Mining Seminar.  The breakfast Opening speaker was Ngoako Ramathlodi, South Africa's Minister of Mineral Resources, and the keynote speaker was Paul Brink, VP of Franco-Nevada Corporation. 
 
This event is the largest African-focused mining event in North America and was again "sold out".  The event drew over 350 participants and featured  21 presentations covering a wide range of topics including mining project updates, country investment opportunities, minimizing risk and the current African mining investment climate.

2014 Annual General Meeting and 20th Anniversary Celebrations

Members attended the AGM, which was followed by the 20th Anniversary cocktail reception held for members, friends and guests. The Rt. Hon. Bob Rae (guest of honour as first Patron of the Chamber 20 years ago) gave an interesting presentation looking at South Africa's past and future and Canada's own indigenous people - their past and future. (An interesting article appeared in the Globe&Mail by Bob Rae on his interactions with the great Nelson Mandela, published at the time of Mandela's passing in 2013.)

Bob Rae was presented with one of David Anderson's iconic caricatures, a trademark of Chamber presentations.
The SAA ticket prize winner was past student associate member of the Chamber, Elena Mayer.

The 4th Annual Cocktail Reception

Chamber held the 4th Annual Cocktail Reception in the Oakville/Mississauga area on October 1, 2014 at the offices of Chamber Grand Sponsor Hatch with collaboration with the CIM GTA West Branch. Our keynote speaker was Mr. Sven Heiner, a South African with a BSc in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Natal, Durban, South Africa. Sven is Managing Director, Project Management & Services with Hatch's Project Delivery Group. His expertise is focused on the project management of various large multi-discipline projects in the mining, metallurgical and infrastructure sectors with involvement for the entire project life cycle, from concept and feasibility to commissioning and start up. This involvement has been from both the owner's and the consultant's side.  He discussed key issues in his field of practice both within South Africa (including Transnet), and other global large-scale projects that Hatch is managing globally.

13th Annual Indaba

Chamber held 13th Annual Indaba evening on September 10, 2014 in Toronto.

 

Our keynote speaker and guest of honour was Charles Sirois, Chair of the Board of CIBC and Chairman and founder of Telesystem Ltd and the founder of Tandem Expansion Fund and founding partner of Enablis Entrepreneurial Network, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to empowering entrepreneurship in Africa. He is on the board of Rogers Communications, a member of the Order of Canada and the author of two books.

  


The event featured a high-level networking reception with an informal wine tasting and exotic African cuisine  Door prizes included a trip for two to South Africa courtesy of award-winning South African Airways and Goway Travel Ltd. , a Shona sculpture from Abantu Art and numerous others.



The presentation portion of the evening (the keynote address, the awarding of the 9th Annual Business Person of the Year sponsored by Hatch and the Chamber’s donation to the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business team participating in the John Molson MBA Case Competition in Montreal) took place in theatre style seating following dinner and before dessert and coffee.



 

 

Innovative Financing for the Global Mining Industry in Challenging Times

The Chamber held a seminar and panel discussion on "Innovative Financing for the Global Mining Industry in Challenging Times on June 18 in Toronto at which ninety-five participants learned from expert advisors and mining companies during an informative and interactive session.  Key topics covered included royalties/streams, private equity and pension funds, sovereign wealth funds and SOEs, commodity-linked debt, preferred share instruments, convertibles, off-take financing, joint ventures and crowd funding. The afternoon wrapped up with a networking cocktail reception.

Our 15th Annual Mining Breakfast with Premier Sponsor SGS took place on Tuesday March 4 during PDAC, in conjunction with MineAfrica’s 12th Annual Investing in African Mining seminar, in what has become the biggest African mining event in North America. Our AGM is for members only but members, friends and guests were all welcome to join us at the welcoming cocktail reception that immediately followed the AGM. After the general meeting, there was a poet recital by the renowned David Calderisi, a Montreal-born actor who has been appearing in television and films since the early 1960s. The poetry recital was followed by Andy MacLean who spoke on the "The Market Outlook- Raymond James Views for 2014".

The Deputy President of South Africa, His Excellency Kgalema Motlanthe, adressed the Chamber at a breakfast reception on Tuesday November 26, 2013 from 8:00 am to 10:30 am at Goodmans. The title of the Deputy Presidents address was on THE SOUTH AFRICAN MINING SECTOR FOR THE FUTURE OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN ECONOMY and provided an explanation of the Framework Agreement signed by the government, mining and organized labour as well as the issues regarding the review of the Mineral and Petroleum Resource Development Act.

The Deputy President also addressed the  following issues: 
- operating and investing in the South African mining sector
- security of tenure and nationalization
- strikes and labour concerns in the mining industry

The Chamber's 12th Annual Indaba evening took place last October 10, 2013 at the Arcadian Loft in Toronto. 

We were delighted to have mining legend Robert Friedland, Executive Chairman and Founder, Ivanplats Limited as our guest of honour and keynote speaker.
 The 2013 event built upon the previous years format of a high-level networking reception with an informal wine tasting and exotic African cuisine (food stations and hand-passed selections) in an exciting venue - the Arcadian Loft - a beautiful, open concept, modern loft space ideal for high-level networking. The evening was a combination of fun, excellent South African wine, food and excellent networking opportunities with leading business and community leaders active in Africa.
